ARE YOU GOING ON HOLIDAY OVER WHITSUN?

Before you go, consider some simple crime prevention measures.
Make sure your home looks occupied to deter would-be thieves.
Consider using timer switches for a radio, and lights in different rooms when it goes dark.
Ideally ask a trusted neighbour, friend or relative to keep an eye on your property.
Ask them if they can they switch lights on/off, draw/open curtains, perhaps park their car in your drive or outside your house
Consider leaving valuable items (jewellery/laptops) with relative/friend.
Mow your lawn and put all garden tools away.
Ensure your shed and garage have good strong locks and back garden gate at least has an inaccessible bolt.
Don’t leave your bins by fences or gates as it helps thieves gain access to your property
Cancel any newspaper or milk deliveries and ask a neighbour if they’d mind collecting

Don’t update/use Facebook/Twitter or other social media saying you are on holiday or where you are. Your home insurance company may not cover you if you have a burglary.

How we can help tackle thefts from vehicles and vehicle interference (trying car doors)

How we can help tackle thefts from vehicles and vehicle interference (trying car doors)

Not many things are more frustrating than having to pay to have your car repaired after being broken into when all that was stolen was a few items worth less than a tenner.

Prevention is always better than the cure, so please follow this advice:

ensure your car is locked, including the boot, whenever left unattended

never leave anything of on display in your car. Cars have been broken into for things like a few pence of loose change, a phone charger, sunglasses or even flip flops.

take anything of value out of the car, including dash-cams and satnavs where possible

keep the interior of your car tidy. Messy cars are attractive. Even a plastic bag of rubbish may attract attention as the thief won’t know what’s in it.

if you park on a driveway, install security lighting and an motion alert based CCTV, video doorbell or driveaway alarm.

The next most important thing is to report all crimes.

Unreported crime of this nature means that the scope for action police can take against the individual is limited, or when they do take action, it results in a non-custodial sentence, meaning the individual is free to continue blighting local communities. This helps:

police identify patterns of crime to target patrols

the offender get a proper punishment once caught

Please contact Warwickshire Police by calling 101

suffered a theft (of any value) from your vehicle

had your vehicle entered but nothing stolen

had your vehicle damaged

have witnessed or have CCTV footage of an individual stealing from a vehicle, entering a vehicle or trying a vehicles door

If you experienced or witnessed any of the above:

call 999 if the offender is still in sight

call 101 otherwise to report AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

don’t hestitate or post it on Facebook until it’s been reported to the police

ask the call handler for an incident number (different a crime number)

When you do post the incident on Facebook, do it as soon as you have reported it to the Police as this may help others avoid becoming a victim and also give others chance to spot the offenders and update the police.

If you do post a incident on Facebook, include the police incident number as others can then quote this if reporting updates or further offences to the police. This has the effect of increase the police priority of the offences.

Drop in burglaries in Warwickshire

Drop in burglaries in Warwickshire

The number of people falling victim to house burglary in Warwickshire has dropped following a ‘sustained focus’ on targeting the most prolific offenders.

Burglaries reduced by 6.2% in the 2018/19 performance year compared to the 2017/18 performance year.

Detective Superintendent Neil Harrison said: “Burglary is a crime that has a huge impact on victims and we are committed to tackling it.

“The number of burglaries in Warwickshire reduced in the 2018/19 performance year due to a sustained focus on targeting prolific offenders, working with partner agencies and colleagues in other forces, and making it as difficult as possible for criminals to operate in the county.

“We use intelligence to ensure the most persistent and dangerous offenders are taken off the streets and brought to justice. This is a primary function of our offender management unit.

“This approach meant there were 134 fewer victims of house burglary in Warwickshire during the last performance year and it is important to recognise the hard work that has gone into achieving this.

“With the investment in frontline policing from the police and crime commissioner we are confident we can continue to cut the number of burglaries.”

In the past 12 months, investigations by the offender management unit have led to a number burglars being given long prison sentences. This includes:

  • In November 2018, a man from Rugby was jailed for three years for a burglary and fraud in Rugby.
  • In November 2018, two car key burglars from Birmingham were jailed for four years eight months each for 12 offences in Warwickshire, Worcestershire and the West Midlands. This followed a large joint investigation by Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police.
  • In December 2018, a man from Nuneaton was jailed for two years and four months for a burglary in Nuneaton.
  • In February 2019, a man from Rugby was jailed for three years six months for a burglary in Rugby.
  • In February 2019, two men from Leicester were jailed for a combined total of five years nine months for a burglary in Nuneaton.

Det Supt Harrison added: “The public has a role to play in making life as difficult as possible for burglars. There are simple steps people can take to secure their property.”

Police offer the following advice:

  • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you’re just out in the garden.
  • Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox).
  • Consider installing effective outside lighting.
  • Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property.
  • Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition.
  • Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied.
  • Secure bikes at home by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked shed or garage.
  • Keep ladders and tools stored away. Don’t leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home.
  • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.
  • Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.
  • Remove valuables from view through ground floor windows.
