Just bought a vehicle?

You must tax a vehicle you’ve bought before you drive it, or declare it off the road (a SORN).

Sometimes the journey is just as much fun as arriving at your destination. Wherever you’re going this #bankholiday weekend, make sure your vehicle is taxed before you set out. https://t.co/vt0kn2qTKH #taxitorloseit

Men claimed to be police officers in a distraction burglary in Nuneaton – Friday 3rd May

Police are appealing for witnesses after two men claimed to be police officers in a distraction burglary in Nuneaton.

We’re urging local residents to be on their guard after two men claimed to be police officers in a distraction burglary in Nuneaton 0n the afternoon of Friday 3rd May.

The incident happened on Friday 3 May at around 3.25pm when the men called at an address in Northumberland Avenue.
They claimed to be from CID to gain access into the house before distracting the occupant. While in the property they stole a quantity of money and jewellery.
Officers are carrying out enquiries and appealing for witnesses.
Detectives are also advising local residents to be on their guard.
DS Dave Moorman, from Nuneaton CID, said: “We would urge local residents to be on their guard and vigilant to anyone knocking on their door unannounced as unfortunately not everyone who calls at the door is who they claim to be.
“Often these people can be very convincing and give no reason for the occupant to believe they are not genuine however we would urge people to be cautious. If in any doubt don’t let them in and check their identity.
“Any genuine caller will not mind waiting or coming back another time after arrangements have been made to check they are who say they are. If possible, arrange for someone else to be at the property when they return.
“We’re appealing for information in relation to this incident and I would ask anyone who was in the area on Friday afternoon and saw anything that seemed suspicious or out of the ordinary to get in contact with us.”
Any witnesses can ring Warwickshire Police on 101 quoting reference 222 030519 or alternatively information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Keep your garden safe this Spring – Tips to nip garden crime in the bud

Now the weather is warming up a bit, many of us will often be spending more time in the garden but with bikes and tools left insecure, thieves will also be out in people’s gardens too.

Here are a few pointers to help keep thieves mitts off your property……

  • Gates, fences and walls should be kept in good repair to stop intruders getting in. Keep gates locked at all times.
  • Strong gates, fences and walls which are kept in good repair can deter intruders from getting to the back and sides of your property.
  • Make sure garden fences are high enough to make climbing them difficult. A trellis can be used to add additional height.
  • Don’t leave expensive equipment like garden tools, bikes, fishing equipment and power tools in the shed.
  • If you have nowhere else to store valuable equipment, take measures to secure your shed and make sure it is good repair.
  • Don’t leave ladders and tools lying around in your garden – these can be used to break into your home.
  • Mark your tools, equipment and bikes with your postcode using security markers.
  • Well positioned external lighting is a great way of keeping intruders at bay and can be bought from most DIY stores.
  • Use signage to let offenders know you have security marked your property.

“Defensive Planting” is the term used to describe the way you can use certain plants, bushes and shrubs to deter burglars. Defensive planting is nature’s way of beating the burglar.

Think about using defensive planting around vulnerable areas such as windows, fences, boundary walls and drainpipes. We enjoy having a well kept, attractive garden and there is no reason why upping the security in your garden should mean otherwise.

Here are a few examples…..

  • Berberis – a vibrant shrub with vivid red leaves, has sharp spine-like prickles, reaches 6ft, good for hedging and growing by walls.
  • Rosa Rugosa “Rubra” – a flowering shrub with densely prickled stems, can reach 6ft, excellent as an impenetrable hedge.
  • Pyracantha- a vigorous evergreen shrub with white flowers in May, followed by orange or red berries, great for hedging, growing under windows or around doorways.
  • Holly- usually grown as a small tree or large bush, can reach up to 50ft, spiny, glossy dark green leaves all year round, excellent hedging plant.
  • Hawthorn, JaponicaandAcanthusare just a few other examples. Ask for advice at your local garden centre.

Warning to dog owners following two children bitten by dogs in Warwickshire

PC Matthew Phillips, Dog Legislation Officer for Warwickshire Police, has issued a warning after two children were bitten by dogs in Warwickshire in the past week. Both children suffered serious injuries that required surgery in the incidents in Nuneaton and Bedworth

PC Phillips said: “We would remind parents, and dog owners that have contact with children, to take care when having their animals around children and not to leave them unattended.

“Dogs can also give off subtle body language when they are not happy with a situation such as licking of lips, yawning, stretching or looking out of the corner of their eye. This can often be a pre-cursor to a bite and noticing this can help you remove whatever is stressing your dog.

“If dog owners are concerned with any behaviour their dog may be exhibiting then we would encourage them to seek professional help from a dog behaviourist.” See more
